As a brand, GreenPan started in 2007 and is part of “The Cookware Company,” a company that started in Hong Kong in 2005.1 Sister brands to GreenPan include Green Life, Vita Verde, GreenChef, Anotech Manufacturing, and Fiesta (no relation to Fiestaware). But GreenPan is by far the biggest brand in the USA.

Tramontina (pronounced “TRAM-on-TINA” in the USA and “TRAM-on-CHEENA” in Brazilian Portuguese, though there are variations on pronunciation in Brazil) a is a privately-held Brazilian company founded in 1911 by Valentin Tramontina, an immigrant from northeastern Italy.1 Tramontina’s headquarters are in Carlos Barbosa, near the southernmost tip of Brazil. Tramontina produces lots of products, but is best known in the USA for metalwares such as machete knives and cookware. Tramontina has over 7,000 employees and eleven factories worldwide as of 2015, including Chinese production.

THE COMPANY

In 1897, Clarence Charles Hobart started the Hobart Electric Manufacturing Company (Troy, Ohio). The company sold motorized coffee mills, meat grinders, and (starting in 1908) stand mixers for commercial bakeries.

In 1919, after World War I, Hobart formed the KitchenAid division, which produced smaller-scale stand mixers for residential customers. Hobart continued to sell non-residential products under the Hobart brand. The overall company remained profitable and independent for decades, occasionally adding new product lines to the KitchenAid brand, such as dishwashers.
